A function to announce the Journalists of the Year awards for the central region was held on 18 September 2003 at Leopard & Lace, Bloemfontein. The competition is being run on a provincial basis, before the finalists go to the national event to be held on 1 November in Johannesburg. The competition is sponsored by Vodacom nationally.
The keynote speaker at the local event was Mr. Phil Molefe, head of the SABC Africa News Service. In his address he mentioned that for the central region the number and quality of entries were such that winners could be picked in all categories - something not possible in some other provinces. For the central region there were total in all 141 entries this year and Mr. Molefe expressed the hope that for next year the number would exceed the 200 mark, especially as journalists from smaller emerging media come aboard.
Amongst this year's central winners were well-known TV faces, such as Charlene Stanley, Richard Newton and Ulrich Hendriks. There are categories for TV, radio and print media.

The Dept. of Human Nutrition of the University of the Free Sate recently celebrated its 20th year by presenting a two-day symposium for nutritionists and dieticians from all over South Africa. While the conference was held at the CR Swart Auditorium of the University, a gala dinner was presented at Summerwood just outside Bloemfontein.
On the photo taken at the gala dinner were from left Mr. Johan van der Merwe (marketing manager of the SA Sugar Association in Durban and one of the sponsors of the symposium), Prof. André Dannhauser (head of the Dept of Human Nutrition at the UFS), Ms. Lynette Botes (Fresenius Kabi in Johannesburg and also a sponsor), Mr. Deon Snyders (Diva Nutrition Products in Johannesburg and also a sponsor), Ms. Carol Browne (nutrition manager of the SA Sugar Association) and Ms. Ronette Lategan (Dept. of Human Nutrition UFS and symposium co-ordinator).
Judy Havenga (Bloemfontein Varsproduktemark), mnr. Lilian Meyer, me. Dora Ndaba en mnr. Godfrey Rathogwa (aldrie Nasionale Landboubemarkingsraad).
