DIE beste manier van verdediging is aanval en dit geld ook in besigheidsmededinging sowel as die ekonomiese stagnasie van Afrika. Daarom het heelwat Suid-Afrikaners Afrika die afgelope tyd op die besigheidsterrein stormgeloop en is besig om opwindende bresse te slaan.
So bv. word berig dat in stede soos Douale in Kameroen dit nou 'n algemene gesig is om inwoners tussen verwaarloosde geboue met blink nuwe selfone te sien stap, terwyl die land se verslete spoorweg deesdae meer passasiers en vrag vervoer as ooit tevore. Dit is egter saans in die stad se kroeë wanneer buitelanders in Afrikaans en Zoeloe kuier, dat dié land se inwoners weet waar die ekonomiese oplewing vandaan kom. Suid-Afrikaners is stadig maar seker besig om sakebelange na die noorde van die kontinent uit te brei. Hulle herbou spoornetwerke, neem sukkelende banke oor en bring nuwe tegnologie soos selfone na mense in die wêreld se armste vasteland. Terselfdertyd word mense ook na Suid-Afrika gestuur om broodnodige opleiding te ondergaan.
Suid-Afrikaanse sakelui beheer nie net die spoorweg in Kameroen nie, maar sal binnekort ook dié van Madagaskar oorneem. Hulle bestuur kragsentrales in Mali en Zambië en brou bier in Mosambiek en Ghana. Hulle is die voorste voorsiener van selfone in Nigerië, Uganda en die Kameroen en beheer banke en supermarkte in Tanzanië, Mosambiek en Kenia. Nando's se hoender en Debonair se pizza is deesdae die gewildste wegneemetes in dié lande. MTN van SA het sedert Augustus verlede jaar meer as 200 000 nuwe kliënte in Nigerië gewerf en daar word verwag dat dié onderneming die land se onbetroubare telefoonmaatskappy binnekort op eie gebied gaan klop. MTN het ook na Kameroen uitgebrei en reeds 137 000 kliënte gewerf.
Baie mense meen Suid-Afrika se hulp en uitbreiding van sakebelange is 'n redding vir 'n sterwende kontinent. SA sakelui voel die oorname van spoorweë en verlenging van kragdrade is deel van Pres. Mbeki se droom om 'n afgeleefde Afrika te herbou. Hulle sê anders as Europese sakelui ken Suid-Afrikaners die Afrika-terrein waarop hul beweeg. Hoewel hulle bewus is van hoë misdaadsyfers en het min mense in dié lande enige kredietgeskiedenis, is hulle nogtans bereid om 'n kans met 'n sakegeleentheid te waag. Daarby huldig sakelui die siening dat daar nie suksesvolle ontwikkeling in Suid-Afrika kan wees as die res van die kontinent in vlamme gehul is nie.
• Gauteng - GAUMAC
Manufacturing small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME's) in Gauteng stand to benefit from the establishment of a series of advisory centres designed to help them improve their competitiveness. In this way they could be fast-tracked to enter the export market. Three separate venues of the Gauteng Manufacturing Advisory Centre (Gaumac), a not-for-profit company, were officially launched in February 2002 in the Vaal triangle, on the East Rand and on the West Rand.
The centres are being funded by the Department of Trade and Industry via the Namac initiative, by the provincial government and by other donor organizations, and are aimed at SMME's in the manufacturing sector employing not more than 200 people. In Gauteng the project is part of the Gauteng government's R1,7 billion Blue IQ initiative, which intends to make huge investments to develop altogether 10 mega projects, including tourism, technology, transport and manufacturing in the province.
“The manufacturing sector is the engine of South Africa's economy and the development of SMME's is crucial for the country's wealth creation, economic growth and foreign exchange earnings”, said Gaumac general manager, Philip Phore. He said Gaumac would focus mainly on manufacturing because the industry offers job creation for both skilled and unskilled people. Phore spelt out how small manufacturing businesses are to be helped:
• Initial client contact: Industrial advisors from the Gaumac will pro-actively visit clients to offer their services;
• Company diagnosis: The industrial advisor undertakes an evaluation and diagnosis to determine the company's areas of weakness and opportunity;
• Decisions on steps required: The client, helped by the industrial advisor, decides what needs to improve the business;
• Advice referral: The client may be advised to consult other sources of business advice, engage a service provider to help make the improvement or to link with specific national and provincial government programmes;
• Improvement programme: The industrial advisor helps the client to oversee the project to ensure successful completion; and
• Measurements and business improvements: The industrial advisor helps the client to measure the improvement and maintains regular contact to ensure continuous business improvement.
• North West - WESTMAC
Meanwhile on 10 April 2002 three sites in north West province for Westmac will be officially opened - the head office at Mafikeng and two satellite offices at Klerksdorp and Rustenburg respectively. This development is expected to usher in a new era for the manufacturing industry in the province.

Só word klein ondernemings gedefinieër as ondernemings met 'n jaarlikse omset van tussen $3 miljoen en $25 miljoen. Die algemeenste afsnypunt is 'n jaarlikse omset van minder as $5 miljoen. Mediumgrootte word gedefinieër as ondernemings met 'n jaarlikse omset van tussen $500 miljoen en $1 miljard.
Die Britse banke definieër klein ondernemings met 'n jaarlikse omset van minder as £1 miljoen en met hoogstens 50 werknemers. Die medium mark word gedefinieër as ondernemings met 'n jaarlikse omset van tussen £1 miljoen en £400 miljoen, terwyl die korporatiewe mark maatskappye is met 'n jaarlikse omset van meer as £400 miljoen.
Tot onlangs het Suid-Afrikaanse banke die kleinsakemark ingedeel op grond van omset tot R5 miljoen, mediumgrootte ondernemings met 'n omset tussen R5 miljoen en R200 miljoen en korporatiewe sake met 'n omset van meer as R200 miljoen.
Die wetgewing wat KMMO's definieër is al jare op die wetboek en word tans deur die Dept. van Handel en Nywerheid hersien in die lig van veranderde omstandighede. Waarskynlik dus sal die definiëring van KMMO's binnekort nuwe inhoud kry.
Tussen 250 en 300 gestremdes is by die Vrystaatse Vereniging vir Persone met Gestremdhede geregistreer om in die ope arbeidsmark te kan werk en word die hulp van sake-ondernemings nou gevra om dié mense 'n kans te gee om te werk. Van hulle het BA-grade, is geregistreerde psigometriste, sommige is rekenaarvaardig, ander kan as administratiewe beamptes werk, ander wil graag skoonmakers wees. Daar is ook geoktrooieerde rekenmeesters. Mense wat kan sweis en houtwerk doen, se name verskyn ook op die databasis. Die plasingsdiens word deur me. Sandra Goosen en mnr. Eucliff Tsunke bedryf. Hulle verskaf geselekteerde mense met gestremdhede en dowes aan werkgewers wat met erns gelyke indiensneming aanpak. Die tipe gestremdhede van die mense is verskillend. Daar is kwadrupleë, parapleë, epilepsielyers, dowes en hardhorendes, asook blindes, terwyl ander psigies en verstandelik gestremd is. Die ouderdom van die mense wissel van 16 tot 50, en hulle is van alle kleurgroepe en van all geslagte.

IN a media statement Eskom North West Region says the theft of copper has increased dramatically since July 2001. A total of 289 incidents, to the value of R2,5 million, have been reported in the Free State in 2001 alone. Although a portion of the copper is recovered, it cannot be used again. With each incident, Eskom loses income, stock, insurance claims and manpower hours. There is also danger involved in stealing live electrical cables - people lose their lives, obtain serious burns and put the lives of the general public and farm animals in danger. Copper is even stolen from transformers in sub-stations. Fences are cut to steal a few copper nuts and bolts. The scrap value of the nuts and bolts are minimum, but the damage to a transformer, which can loose all its oil in one night, can be up to R1 million. Eskom works closely with scrap metal dealers and law enforcement agencies to resolve the problem and urgently needs the assistance of the public. A reward system is in place, where by members of the public can call Eskom's call center (0860 535-535) 24 hours a day, with information that can lead to the prevention of copper theft. The reward value varies, depending on the quality of the information supplied, but can be up to R25 000.
