The awards were made at a glittering banquet held on 6 May 2004 at Oliewenhuis Museum in Bloemfontein, attended by the winners and their parents and relatives, as well as staff of the two Schools.
The awards were handed over by the Director of the two Schools, Dr. André van den Berg, who added as follows to the views expressed by Prof. Le Roux: “Lifelong learning is the key to continued personal marketability and without it, upward mobility and career success is unlikely. 50% of what you learn at any point in time will be out of date in the next 5 to 10 years. In order to survive, keep developing and refining the skills and talents the world of work demands. Therefore, the Central University of Technology, Free State, would welcome you back at any time to continue your studies to become either business or academic leaders.”
Anyone familiar with Nelson Mandela Drive in Bloemfontein could attest to the fact that as far as business is concerned - both in terms of the variety offered as well as amounts of turnover in any given period - it constitutes one of the most powerful streets in the Free State, if not the most powerful.
Although this focus is limited in its extent, it does indicate the power of business being offered and being done in the 3km long Nelson Mandela Drive. The advertisers waving their flags in this feature, do it with one purpose in mind and that is to say : “We're ready to supply you with the best - try us !”
The Bram Fischer Building headquartering the Mangaung Local Municipality (MLM) constitutes not only one of the landmarks of Nelson Mandela Drive in Bloemfontein, but is also a beacon on the landscape of the entire Mangaung metropole area.
However, much more than that, the Bram Fischer Building (or Glass Palace as it is also popularly known) is one of the venues in the Mangaung area where the most business is done, where a lot of business is being reverberated from and where policy planning for local business development is done.
If the total monetary amount is taken in terms of rates and taxes being paid at the Bram Fischer Building on a daily | monthly | annual basis, it comes to a cash flow of millions of rands.
If the significance is considered of the value of building plans and other developmental projects being approved by the MLM, of SMME and LED support being provided by the MLM and the procurement system being run by the MLM, then an idea starts to shape of the significance of the Bram Fischer Building in terms of business and development.
Add to this the impact of the implementation of the MLM's Integrated Developmental Plan and its industrial and investing strategies, then it is clear that the Bram Fischer Building serves to a great extent as a launching pad for development and progress in the Mangaung metropole area and even
ndirectly far beyond.
Therefore seen against the backdrop of the Greater Mangaung covering an area of 6 363 km², being home to some 850 000 residents and functioning as the executive capital of the Free State, the pivotal role of the Bram Fischer Building is clear.
Mangaung is indeed a powerful regional economic center - a world class African city built on the foundation of a dynamic, vibrant, sustainable and investor-friendly economy.
This is all captured within the parameters of MLM's Integrated Development Plan (IDP) outlining the need for an economic development strategy that encourages an environment conducive to creating a business-friendly environment and attractive opportunities for new investors. The four strategic areas of the IDP are economic growth and sustainable livelihood, community resilience and self-reliance, service excellence and sustainability and promoting civic leadership and a shared vision, all pointing to the overriding objective that by 2015 Mangaung should be recognized nationally and internationally as a safe and attractive place to live, work and invest.
Consequently the steps of any person involved either directly or indirectly in this dynamic and powerful development process, have led or will sooner or later lead through the Bram Fischer Building in Nelson Mandela Drive.

Voorbeelde in Bloemfontein is o.m. Victorian Square,.
The team of Water Purifiers & Filters (WPF) at their exhibition stand at the Bloem Show 2004, from left Barry Schönfeldt, Chantel Strydom, Willie Kritzinger and Jimmy Hambakis (managing director from Johannesburg). According to Hambakis, WPF had a highly successful stand at the Bloem Show and they are currently in a process of opening-up a direct branch in Bloemfontein instead of working just through agents.
Whereas the SA financial services arena has recently seen an unprecedented proliferation of products, services and changes in legislation affecting individual financial planning and corporate employee benefits, the field has become tremendously complicated and often confusing for the private individual. In addition to exchange control legislation changes, investors must keep track of changing legislation regarding capital gains tax, estate duty and personal income tax, while investors are also faced with the swing from defined benefit to defined contribution funds. Moreover, access to and affordability of health care services have become a critical issue in both corporate benefit planning and individual financial planning.
The upshot of all this is that given the wide range of investment products, health care deliveries, offshore structures and investment alternatives, as well as the effects of the economy, interest rates and inflation, a holistic view of long-term financial planning is necessary. This is where Advance Wealth Management (Pty) Ltd (“AWM”), a nationwide consulting, asset management and distribution practice which recently opened an office in Bloemfontein, comes in. According to the regional manager of AWM, Mr. Ryno Smith, the aim is to provide objective and professional advisory services to private and corporate clients, particularly with regard to financial planning and corporate benefit requirements. He says he and his staff base their service delivery on stringent risk management and controls, with strict adherence to quality control and service delivery, thus providing the best possible advice and service.

More info in this regard could be obtained from Ms Hettiënne von Abo of the AHI Free State and chairperson of the Bothaville Sakekamer at (056) 515 3549 or 083 439 1140.
At the Bothaville meeting Mr Swanepoel also commented as follows on rumours that new gold mining shafts are to be sunk at Bothaville : “One day there will be gold mines around Bothaville, but definitely not within the next five years.”
