It's not about bragging its about indicating what women with an enterprising spirit, with faith in what they are doing, with sound judgment and with a deft hand, can achieve. While in the final analysis its only for the grace of God, women such as these do serve as an example and inspiration for many others.
Representative situation
Statistics from Empowerdex show that in December 2002, just 29 women held a total of 51 positions in companies listed on the main JSE board. There were three chair positions, three executive directors and 45 non-director positions. Empowerdex also shows that women occupy 17% of senior executive management, 25% of senior management, 24% of middle management and 28% of junior management in South Africa.
In all spheres of business, from workers (39% of the paid workforce) to board members (6.6%), there are relatively few women around. Nevertheless, while women in business in South Africa are by no means representative yet, there is an increase in the number of women edging their way into business. Statistics from Nedbank indicated that the number of small and medium-sized companies owned by women has of late grown from 35% to about 40%.
Pabi Mokuele - A full-blooded entrepreneur
If you want to talk to a full-blooded entrepreneur, then meet Pabi Mokuele of Pabi's Bakery, Pabi's Catering Services and Pabi's Guesthouse at Phuthaditjhaba. It all started in 1991 when having qualified as a teacher, Pabi could not find a salaried job. So she started to bake bread and confectionary at home in Phuthaditjaba, using her mother's recipes, which the latter in turn received from her mother. Her baked products she would sell to the local market through local women vendors.
This was so successful that Pabi was requested to provide catering services for groups of people, e.g. at workshops, functions etc. and that is how Pabi's Catering Services, a business on it's own, came into being. This in turn led to a situation that many a visitor to Phuthaditjaba would express to Pabi the need for a place to overnight. Pabi heeded the call and converted her three-bedroomed home into a guesthouse and in time, with the assistance of the FDC, expanded into the current Pabi's Guesthouse consisting of two adjacent houses with 12 bedrooms.
Apart from her three businesses, each with it's own bank account, Pabi has a passion to empower and train people from the community and is currently providing training within the framework of the National Skills Development Strategy to women baking at home, trainees in catering and mentorship to prospective guesthouse owners in townships. Says Pabi further: “I have learned the hard way, but I can't be anything els than an entrepreneur. It is also my passion to empower other people to become entrepreneurs in their own little or big way. My motto is : 'Work hard and be smart'. I'm striving to be professional in what I am doing. Currently I am looking to export my homed-baked rusks with their own true African identity under my brand name.” Pabi says she likes to network, especially from grassroots level upwards and well- intended people are welcome to contact her.

In dealing with our customers, we assess through a process of consultation their needs and then suitable interventions are identified and implemented.
"These interventions vary from implementing a business development or productivity improvement project, drawing up a business plan or marketing strategy, developing a product brand, managing a skills development project or implementing a life skills programme.” So if you want your business or your institution or yourself as entrepreneur energised, equipped and rightly positioned for the demands of modern-day advancement, this female cast is your call!
It is generally being said of late that the Free State is in terms of GNP amongst the lower half of the ladder of provinces in South Africa, that unemployment and poverty is on the rise and that economic growth in the province is being adversely affected by drainage of corporate investment, an outflow of unprocessed products and insufficient policy direction. What is the real scenario and what is being done as regards overall economic development in the Free State ? To find answers to these and other questions, the Free State Bussiness Bulletin approached the chairperson of the Premier's Economic Advisory Council (PEAC), Dr Khotso Mokhele, with some questions, to which he replied as follows:
The mandate of the present PEAC is 2001 to September 2004 - in a nutshell, what has been achieved by the PEAC so far and what can we expect for the rest of your term of office ?
The PEAC is now a fully-fledged organization with its own Secretariat, made up of the Executive Officer and the Administrative Assistant. About 12 research areas were identified in the field of local economic development, SMME development, manufacturing potential, FSDP process evaluation, economic profile of the province, tourism development, knowledge economy, minerals potential assessment of the province, possible utilization of redundant mine infrastructure for the benefit of local communities, potential for small scale mining in the province, game farming and agricultural diversification. Draft reports for about half of these projects are currently being studied and scrutinized. The expected primary output of the current PEAC tenure is a comprehensive economic development strategy consolidating from the different research projects.
The PEAC is supposed to embody and combine all the leading roleplayers and expertise in the field with a view to direct the province towards maximum economic growth. How would you rate the prospects in this respect briefly, please ?
Given the fact that at its very first consultative forum there were about 100 key participants from different sectors of the broader Free State society, it could be said that the PEAC is indeed moving towards that goal. As you might have seen during the discussions at the forum, the fruits of the PEAC's work will only be realized in the long run as the approach we have taken is that of trying to generate sustainable economic development and growth, as opposed to short term benefits. A series of smaller consultative forums in other Free State towns are to follow during the course of 2004 to ensure that everybody is brought on board in this very challenging task.
Very concisely, what can you tell us about the outcome and effects of the PEAC Annual Stakeholder Consultative Forum on 27 November 2003 ?
Before the recent stakeholder forum, very few people outside government knew anything about this organization and what it does. Stakeholders are now fully aware of the existence of this extra platform through which they are able to channel their economic viewpoints, suggestions and also engage in critical debates and discussions about the future of the Free State economy. Since the forum was held, the organization, through its Secretariat, has been receiving quite a lot of enquiries about its work and offers from the public to make inputs and suggestions. Looking at it from that angle, yes, the forum achieved its intended objectives.
Again in a nutshell, what is your view about the economic future of the Free State over the next two years ?
From the perspective of the PEAC, there is not much change that would have happened by then. The picture will still be pretty much the same, with the exception of a sizeable number of jobs created as a result of the national government's proposed expanded public works programmes. General economic growth will most likely follow the national trend with a slight improvement. The effects of the PEAC's work will only become visible in about five to ten years. As you might have seen during the presentation at the forum, we are taking a long term view of the province's economic prospects.

Seven Changes that will challenge managers and workers
This information about the changing workplace will give you an idea of what's to come. These seven trends will reshape the work environment over the next 10 years according to a leading personnel practitioner from Australia we recently met.
• The Virtual Organisation: We are rapidly moving towards a workforce that uses electronic technology to link workers and functions at scattered sites. This represents the beginning of the so-called virtual organisation. This trend will reshape traditional approaches to group decision making. In contrast to face to face discussions, e-mail discussions make low status individuals less hesitant to participate in discussions and relinquish their point of view.
• Temporary Workers: The number of individuals employed by temporary agencies has increased in the last 10 years. Organisations are also streamlining operations and reducing costs by outsourcing support functions. Finding new ways to motivate temporary employees will become a key issue since these workers lack traditional motivators such as promotions and profit sharing programs.
• Knowledge Workers: In certain areas we are shifting from a work force that produces products to one that primarily manages information. This growth of knowledge workers will require organisations to rethink their traditional approached to directing, coaching and motivating employees.
• Computerised Coaching and Electronic Monitoring: In future there will be a dramatic increase in the use of electronic systems to accelerate employee learning, decision making and performance monitoring. These allow employees to learn their jobs faster, provide workers and managers with immediate feedback, and make it easier to pinpoint performance problems.
• The Growth of Worker Diversity: In the next few years, worker diversity will become an even more critical issue. One reason is that a large number of people now entering the job market for the first time is women and minorities, and just a small number constitutes white males. This means that many people will have their first experiences with multicultural work groups and will need to adapt to different work expectations and communication styles.
• The Aging Work Force: Hopefully, companies will begin to see the value of older employees, who can provide experience and maturity to the organisation and who are often more flexible about taking part-time and odd-hour shifts.
• Dynamic Work Force: Work methods and functions become more and more fluid processes that require workers to adapt continuously. Managerial performance will be based less on the ability to direct and co-ordinate and more on improving key work processes. The dynamic organisation require workers to be able to jump quickly into new ventures and manage temporary project focused teams.
