Since forklifts, other related utility equipment, heavy plant machinery, earthmoving equipment and hydraulics is a highly specialized and essential segment of the modern-day economy, this promotion is presented to indicate what is available in this regard in central South Africa.
Being such a multi-faceted segment with highly specialized and sophisticated machinery and equipment, there are also clear, distinctive solutions to specified and particular needs, e.g. in construction, numerous industrial applications, farming, mining, etc. Therefore, in this feature not too much detail is being gone into and it is left to the advertising suppliers to speak for themselves.
Evidently the main brands are Toyota, TCM, Komatsu, Clarke, etc. in no particular order. Again, the reader should judge for him- or herself. Do look, however, apart from product itself, for points such as aftersales service, resale value, etc.
What should be mentioned, nevertheless, is that there is currently in the Free State and its adjacent areas almost numerous new developments and projects presenting surely a dire need for forklifting and other related machinery applications projects such as the estate developments at Bloemfontein, Clarens, Oranjeville (Lizard Point), Virginia, Parys, etc., not to speak of other large residential developments. Sasolburg is the venue of huge new industrial extensions, while new diamond mining near Kroonstad is a district possibility. This is just to mention some scope.

Komatsu SA extends utility equipment range with skid steer loader and tele-handler
Komatsu Southern Africa, one of the leading suppliers of earthmoving equipment in the country, is to expand its current utility equipment range in response to increased demand for small equipment such as backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders and telescopic handlers.
The first step is the introduction of a skid steer loader, the 2,5 t SK714-5, and also a telescopic handler, the 10,6 t WH714-1.
The SK714-5 skid steer loader has a flywheel power of 34,7 kW (SAE J1349), an operating weight of 2 530 kg and an operating capacity of 650 kg. It is equipped as standard with a 1 550 mm loader bucket with a capacity of 0,35 cu m.
The WH714-1 tele-handler has an operating weight of 10 620 kg, a lifting height of 14 100 mm and a lifting capacity of 4 000 kg.
Komatsu already has a strong presence in the backhoe loader market, where it is among top suppliers with its WB93R-5 unit the latest model in the 7,5 t class of Komatsu machines having proven themselves to be highly successful and popular.
The SK714-5 skid steer loader was among the first skid steer loaders introduced by Komatsu to the global market as far back as 2001and rated to be among the best machines in its class and a top seller in major markets, especially in Europe.
The SK714-5 has established an excellent track record in numerous applications worldwide in the past five years, commented Errol Staude, Komatsu SA's Utility Product Manager.
It has proven itself to be a superior machine, so we are confident of winning a sizeable share of the local skid steer loader market in this class, backed up by Komatsu SA's service and parts supply support which is now widely acknowledged as being among the best in Southern Africa.
The versatile and highly manoeuvrable SK714-5 skid steer loader can be fitted with specialised attachments supplied by Komatsu for use in a variety of different applications in numerous industries ranging from agriculture and materials handling to a variety of construction and civil engineering applications.
The optional attachments include a cold planer, a mixing bucket, a backhoe excavator, an angle broom, a pick-up sweeper, an auger, a pallet fork, a dozer blade and a grapple fork.
The machines are equipped with a universal type quick-hitch to give it the flexibility and versatility to use other brands of attachments, in addition to the selection of attachments Komatsu SA supplies.
Unique or distinctive features of the SK714-5, compared with other skid steer loaders in the same class, include Komatsu's Closed Load Sensing System (CLSS) on the hydraulics, with Proportional Pressure Control (PPC), to control all movements, plus double-adjustment travel pumps with axial piston motors, to ensure superb versatility and speed.
The machine has an exceptionally high bucket breakout force of 1,716 kN (1 716 kgf) and a maximum traction force of 3 200 kg. It has a wide wheelbase and axle distance, combined with a balanced redistribution of weights, thereby ensuring great stability and safety, low tyre wear and high operating loads.
Visibility from the cab is outstanding and affords the operator a view in all directions, with all main components easily accessible for maintenance purposes.
Additional noteworthy features include two speeds as standard, with a maximum speed of 16km/h, the highest in its class, wide bucket opening and closing angles for high performance in all conditions and an LCD instrument panel, enabling the operator to monitor the various functions at all times.
The new skid steer loader and tele-handler will be available in the South African market from May 2006.
