Anglo Coal sells KZN reserves to empowerment venture: Anglo Coal has announced the sale of its KwaZulu-Natal coal reserves - comprising an estimated 104 million saleable tons - to Leeuw Mining and Exploration, a black empowerment company. Zimele, Anglo American's business development and empowerment unit, takes a minority investment of 10%. LME benefits from the technical assistance of ATD (the technical services division of Anglo American) and Hatch Africa, an engineering consulting firm. PricewaterhouseCoopers Corporate Finance (Pty) Ltd. and Zimele have overseen the financial and commercial aspects of the new venture.
IDC developmental role: According to figures, released by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), from July 1999 to June 2002, the IDC financed some 128 projects to the value of R513 million in the textile, clothing, leather and footwear industries. Although the industry may indeed have a volatile history, it has a high developmental impact through the creation of jobs, the generation of foreign exchange earnings and foreign exchange savings due to import replacement. The industry contributes more than 10% to manufacturing GDP, 12% to manufacturing employment and 20% to manufacturing exports and is one of the industries prioritised by national government.
Lumber City: The story of Lumber City started when Charles Flemming purchased Lumber City in Montague Gardens in 1989 and after five years of phenomenal growth, decided to purchase the franchise. At present Lumber City has almost 40 stores throughout South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. There is ample evidence that the Lumber City business formula has dramatically improved many entrepreneurs' lives.
