Flowing from the historic assistance agreement signed between Ntsika Enterprise Promotion Agency and the Motheo District Municipality on 13 March 2002 in Bloemfontein, an SMME summit for the Motheo district is scheduled for 12-13 April 2002 in Bloemfontein. For full particulars of the agreement, see page 9 of the printed copy. The venue for the summit is the Sand du Plessis Theatre.
Covering the towns and communities of Bloemfontein, Mangaung, Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Excelsior, Westminster, Ladybrand, Tweespriut, Hobhouse, Wepener, Vanstadensrus, Dewetsdorp and Thaba Phatshwa, the Motheo District Municipality is currently a region which for various regions is hard-pressed by unemployment, economic slow-down and a lack of manufacturing industries. Therefore the focus on developing the SMME sector is creating high hopes, especially amongst micro enterprises, hawkers and would be entrepreneurs. They see it as new avenues for development being opened up, while from the ranks of the formal business sector hope is being expressed for new private-public partnerships.
Mr. Mondi Mvambi of Motheo told The Business Bulletin that the SMME summit is being planned as a practical kick-off for a new developmental era and that all local SMME's, roleplayers and stakeholders are welcome. There is a possibility that Mr. Alec Erwin, Minister for Trade & Industry, might also attend the summit.
