SMME light in tunnel
The first really tangible support project for the SMME sector in the Free State materialized with the establishment of the Mangaung SMME Service Centre in October 2005 at Sanlam Plaza, Bloemfontein. Initiated and arranged by the Local Economic Development Unit of the Mangaung Local Municipality (MLM), the Centre was the first concerted effort to provide tangible support to emerging entrepreneurs in the form of assistance with business networking. While all municipalities have a LED unit commissioned to develop SMME's in a viable way and according to their IDP's (integrated development plans), very little if anything has as yet come of it. The same applies to most of the SMME programmes of provincial and central government departments. The Free State was even the only province in the country not to have had a MAC Centre as part of the national roll-out of the successful manufacturing advice centres (NAMAC). Harsh remarks, but we challenge anybody to dispute the facts. Now on further initiative of the MLM and in collaboration with seda (the new Small Enterprise Development Agency, as converted from the NAMC set-up), the Mangaung SMME Service Centre has been upgraded and overhauled into the seda Mangaung Centre, serving local and provincial SMME's in a highly targeted and professional way. Congratulations and welcome to seda Mangaung - may you go from strength to strength and may you really make a difference into needy Free State SMME sector!

Developmental Free State budget
For the first time the Free State provincial budget for 2006/07 delivered by the MEC for Finance in the Legislature on 17 February 2006 is developmentally-orientated. It moved away from largely a social handout to an economic growth stimulating budget. As such it is to be warmly welcomed. May the delivery phase rise up to the expectations of tangible economic development, job creation, business stimulation and social progress for Free Staters across the board.
