"Unemployable mass"
It's a term coined and it's sticking: “Unemployable mass”. It is sticking because, as we are thinking, it is so relevant to the Free State, to South Africa and to Africa.
Despite what any so-called official statistics might say, the unemployment figure gets moving up, basically from anything at 45% to some 95% in worst case areas.
Also, importantly, the chances are getting slimmer of the unemployed obtaining jobs, sustainable at least. Why? Because technological development is moving faster ahead than skills development and training. There are now too many adults - sometimes millions of them - who are simply not skilled or insufficiently skilled trained and / or capable of making a meaningful contribution to the economy.
Reading, writing, communication and perceptive skills are not up to standard by a long way. Moreover, the computer, the Internet, cellphone and other technology are just widening the gap - and the system has no real solution.
It's a problem and a burden, this “unemployable mass”.
