Civil engineering prospects : The growth rate of the SA civil engineering sector is expected to slow down this year from the 20% achieved last year to around 10% as mostly small projects are currently under way or will be implemented for the rest of 2003. However, 2004 is expected to see more significant growth as a result of mega projects such as the Gautrain rail project and the Coega deep-sea harbour and industrial development zone. Other big projects expected to be implemented during the coming few years include the relocation of Durban International Airport to La Mercy and several dams. In 2002 South African civil contractors' revenue soared to R16,5 billion, of which around R4 billion was earned outside the country's borders.

SA entrepreneurs positief oor 2003 : Volgens 'n internasionale opname wat einde verlede jaar onder ondernemers gedoen is deur Grant Thornton Kessel Feinstein, is 84% van Suid-Afrikaanse entrepreneurs optimisties dat hul ondernemings beter gaan vaar in 2003. Suid-Afrika se syfer was die hoogste van die 19 lande wat aan die peiling deelgeneem het. Optimisme was ook hoog onder Amerikaners en Grieke, met 72% van ondernemers wat gevoel het vooruitsigte is beter vir 2003. Oosterse lande, daarenteen, was oorwegend pessimisties, met Singapoer, Hongkong en Japan wat die laagste verwagtinge gekoester het.

SA airports show increased traffic : Although the rest of the world saw major declines in passenger travel last year following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US, South African airports experience at present a positive growth rate. The average growth rate for the six-month period from January to June last year, as seen against the same period for 2001, saw Johannesburg International Airport growing 6,2% and Cape Town International Airport growing by 7,3%. This is in comparison with a significant traffic decline at most major European airports - German airports Frankfurt and Munich had a negative growth rate of -4,9% and 1,5% respectively, London Heathrow -1,5% and London Gatwick -11,9%, while Paris airports Charles de Gaulle and Orly had -4,6% and -9,4% negative growth rates respectively.

SA vervaardiging vertoon goed : Volgens Statistieke SA het vervaardigingsproduksie in SA in 2002 met 5,4% gestyg, vergeleke met die vorige jaar. Die vervaardigingsektor is vir sowat 20% van die bruto binnelandse produk (BBP) verantwoordelik en die goeie vertoning in die sektor is een van die redes vir die relatiewe goeie BBP-groei in die eerste drie kwartale van verlede jaar.

Motorkapings styg geweldig : Betroubaar word berig dat die afgelope twee jaar bykans 30 000 motors in SA gekaap is - meer as 14 000 per jaar. Hiervan is meer as 9 000 in Gauteng alleen. Meer as 80% van alle kapings is in motoropritte. Teenkapingstelsels is deesdae só gesofistikeerd dat 'n pistool teen iemand se kop die enigste manier is om motors te kry, word gesę. Free State finances : Free State Legislator in February 2003 in opening some figures mentioned by Premier Winkie Direko do not reflect well on the province economic growth of 0,6%, unemployment at 34% and local governmental debt of R2,2 billion. Meanwhile on 5 March 2003 MEC for Finance Zingile Dingani presented the provincial budget for 2003 / 4 totalling R11 055 566 000 - a year on year growth of 19,3%.
