R30 million injection for provincial resorts and reserves : The FS Dept. of Tourism, Environmental & Economic Affairs has announced that it has allocated R30 million for 2004 to upgrade and refurbish eco-tourism and tourism development facilities within provincial resorts and reserves. According to a media release this exercise has led to employment opportunities and poverty alleviation for historically disadvantaged individuals within those asset-based communities. The project has seen 480 jobs being created with 80% of the allocated budget channeled to SMME's. According to the media release refurbishment of resorts and reserves will uplift the standard of the Department's facilities and put them in par with those that are privately owned and in return will attract more tourists.

Golden Gate and QwaQwa National Park amalgated : The QwaQwa National Park has been amalgamated with the Golden Gate Highlands National Park creating a 33 640 ha national park now being managed by the South African National Parks (SANParks). R37,3 million is currently being spent to upgrade the new unit, with a further R24 million budgeted over the next three years. Amongst others a new luxurious rest camp, Mountain Retreat, is being built, which at 2 200 m altitude would be the highest rest camp in South Africa.

New gold discovery : It is being reported that Canadian gold-mining company Thistle Mining has discovered a significant new resource block in the Eldorado reef package at its Pres. Steyn Gold Mine (PSGM) complex at Welkom. Named Distal Eldorado the new discovery amounts to a total of 26 tons of gold. Thistle Mining is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Alternative Investment Market in London, with offices in Toronto, Edinburgh and Manila. Based on resources and reserves, Thistle Mining is considered one of the top 20 gold-miners in the world.

Chinese tiere in Suid-Vrystaat geteel : Na veel getoutrek, lyk dit of die projek om Chinese tiere in 'n 30 000 ha reservaat tussen Philippolis en Colesberg te teel, nou voortgaan onder leiding van me. Li Quan en mnr. Stuart Bray. Die plan is om met Chinese welpe in die reservaat, voortaan bekend as die Laohou Valley Reserve, te teel en die aanwas na China terug te stuur vir hervestiging voor die aanbreek van die Olimpiese Spele in Beijing in 2008.
